Our Mission

The GodWin Foundation is dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and removing the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the care, support, and resources they deserve. We serve the unheard, the unseen, and the underserved.

What We Stand For

Our Core Values

Hope

Hope is not a luxury — it is a right. Every person we serve deserves to believe their life can change.

Help

We go where people are, not where it is convenient. Real, tangible support without conditions or delay.

Advocacy

We speak up for those silenced, overlooked, or misunderstood by systems built to serve them.

Dignity

Every person is worthy — fully seen because of their humanity. A diagnosis is never a verdict.

Faith

With God by your side, you will always win. There but for the grace of God go I.

Purpose

Every person has a God-given purpose. Our work is to help them find it, stand in it, and live it.

Our Story

About The GodWin Foundation

The Story Behind the Name

Born from a life of purpose

The GodWin Foundation was not born in a boardroom. It was born in a life — in 25 years of working across various positions in the human services field, witnessing firsthand what happens when people in crisis have nowhere to turn.

Founder Danielle Godwin carries her father’s name as both a legacy and a declaration. Her mother taught her: “Never think you are better than anyone else, because at any moment, that could be you.”

“There but for the grace of God go I.”

Danielle Godwin — Founder & President/CEO

Godwin. With God, I win. It is not just a name — it is a covenant. And it is the promise this organization makes to everyone it serves.

Why We Exist

The problem we were built to solve

Mental illness does not discriminate. It affects the mother nearly losing her children solely because of a diagnosis. The veteran coming home carrying invisible wounds. The family without language for what they are experiencing.

For over 25 years, Danielle witnessed the judgment and disregard for individuals with mental illness running quietly through the systems designed to serve them. These questions did not leave her. They fueled her.

“Treat every person you serve as if that is you — with care, compassion, and dignity, despite anything else.”

Our Founder

Danielle Godwin, B.S., M.A.

Founder & President/CEO

Danielle Godwin is a seasoned human services professional with over 25 years of experience working alongside individuals living with mental illness, housing instability, and systemic inequity. She founded The GodWin Foundation because she could not look away.

After decades of witnessing people in crisis be dismissed and failed by the systems meant to serve them, she decided: if no one was going to build what was needed, she would.

Who We Serve

You belong here

The GodWin Foundation serves individuals in Hampton Roads, Virginia and surrounding communities living with mental illness and facing compounding barriers to care.

Individuals Experiencing Homelessness

Adults living without stable housing who also carry untreated mental health diagnoses. We provide the wrap-around support needed to sustain recovery.

Veterans & Military Personnel

Service members facing invisible wounds who may be reluctant to access traditional mental health resources due to stigma or coverage gaps.

Returning Citizens

Adults transitioning from incarceration who face mental health challenges alongside systemic barriers to housing, employment, and services.

Uninsured & Underinsured Adults

Individuals who need mental health services but cannot access them due to lack of insurance or inability to afford care. We exist to bridge this gap.

Families & Caregivers

Families who need education, guidance, and connection to resources. Mental illness affects the entire family system, and we serve the whole family.

Community Members

We work to shift cultural stigma and build a community where mental illness is met with compassion, language, and understanding rather than judgment.
